What’s the Ideal SHGC Rating for Windows?

Whether you are installing residential windows or commercial skylights, it is important to check the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) ratings of the products you are considering purchasing. These ratings will give you an idea of how much solar radiation can pass through the windows and skylights. They will be able to help you decide if the windows could be effective in protecting your interior against heat coming from the outside. Read on to learn more about SHGC ratings.

Why Are SHGC Ratings Important?

SHGC ratings of various window products are determined by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The organization conducts tests on the windows so that they can assign appropriate ratings. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA use the SHGC ratings in assessing the energy efficiency of the windows for product certifications and federal incentive and rebate programs.

On the consumers’ end, SHGC ratings basically help people choose the right window products, especially if they are shopping for a window replacement project. Along with other information such as U-factor, condensation resistance, and visible transmittance, SHGC ratings are printed on product labels so that consumers can easily refer to them and make comparisons of different window products.

What Is the Recommended SHGC Rating for New Windows?

In southern climates that heavily rely on cooling, windows should have an SHGC rating of less than 0.27. Meanwhile, in the mixed climates of the South and central regions, windows and skylights should have an SHGC rating below 0.30. In the mixed climates of the North and Midwest, the recommended SHGC rating for windows and skylights is less than 0.40. In the colder climates of the North, a window’s SHGC rating is actually not as important as the U-factor. Nevertheless, if air conditioning is used from time to time, the SHGC rating of windows should be less than 0.40. If air conditioning is not used, windows should have an SHGC rating of 0.30 to 0.60.
