Signs Your Windows May Need Replacing

All Professional Remodeling Group provides window replacement for homeowners in Cedar Grove and nearby towns in Essex County. Our own team removes failing windows and installs new ones from brands such as Pella and Andersen.

Watch for these warning signs:

  • Fog between the panes. Haze or moisture inside a double-pane window means the seal around the glass has failed. Wiping won't clear it, and the window no longer insulates as designed.

  • Soft or rotted wood at the sill. Rot means water has been getting into the frame. Replacing the sash alone won't fix it, so the frame usually has to come out.

  • Water stains below the window. Stains on the trim or wall under a window often mean water is getting in where the window meets the wall. Fixing that usually requires new flashing, not just new glass.

  • Sashes that won't stay open or won't open at all. On older windows, worn balances, warped wood, and layers of paint can make a window hard to open for fresh air or in an emergency.

  • Single-pane glass. Older single-pane windows, even with storm windows added, insulate much less than modern double-pane glass.

Not every problem needs a new window. A broken crank, worn balance, or tired weatherstripping can often be fixed through our door and window services. When several problems affect the same window, or the same failure shows up across many windows, replacement usually makes more sense. A free estimate can help you decide.

Insert or Full-Frame: Two Ways to Replace a Window

The condition of the existing frame determines which method fits each opening.

Method: Insert (pocket)
What is removed: The sashes and hardware; the existing frame stays
Best for: Square, solid frames with no rot
Trim and siding: Usually left in place

Method: Full-frame
What is removed: The entire window, down to the rough opening
Best for: Rotted frames or sills, past leaks, or a change in window size
Trim and siding: Interior trim is replaced, and the exterior is reflashed

Rot changes the plan. If a sill is soft or rotted, an insert window would sit on damaged wood and hide the problem. Full-frame replacement exposes the damaged wood so it can be repaired before the new window goes in.

Window Materials, Glass, and Styles

Replacement windows come in several frame materials. Vinyl is typically the most affordable and needs no painting. Wood offers a traditional look inside and is often clad in a weather-resistant material outside. Fiberglass and composite frames resist warping and expand and contract less than vinyl as temperatures change.

Replacement windows typically use double-pane insulated glass, often with a low-E coating and argon gas fill to reduce heat loss. Some product lines offer triple-pane glass for added insulation and noise reduction. To compare options, check the NFRC label, which lists the U-factor (lower numbers mean less heat loss) and the solar heat gain coefficient (lower numbers mean less heat from sunlight gets through).

Common styles include double-hung, casement, awning, slider, picture, and bay or bow windows, and grid patterns can match the house's original look. For rooms that need more natural light from above, we also install skylights.

How Replacement Windows Are Installed

Replacement windows are usually made to order, so accurate measurements come first. Each opening is measured at several points, and the smallest measurement is used. That leaves room to shim the new window level if the frame has shifted over time.

During installation, the old sashes are removed (or the entire window, for a full-frame job), and the opening is checked for rot. The new window is set level, plumb, and square, then shimmed and fastened in place.

The gap around the window is sealed with low-expansion foam, which insulates without bending the frame. On the exterior, flashing and sealant direct water away from the opening. Each window is then opened, closed, and locked to confirm it works properly before the trim is finished.

Coordinating Windows With Siding and Roofing

Window openings are where siding, trim, flashing, and house wrap meet. When different contractors replace windows and siding at different times, later work can disturb earlier flashing and create a path for leaks.

We offer vinyl siding installation and James Hardie fiber cement siding. When windows and siding are replaced together, the windows can be installed and flashed before the new siding goes on. As a trusted roofing contractor in Cedar Grove, NJ, we also repair and replace roofs, so one company can take care of your roof, siding, and windows.

Common Questions About Replacing Windows

1

How long does it take to replace windows?

Most of the wait is for the windows themselves, since replacement windows are usually made to order and lead times vary by manufacturer and product line. Installation is quicker. Insert windows go in fastest, while full-frame replacements take longer because the trim is removed and the opening is reflashed.

2

Can I replace just the foggy glass instead of the whole window?

Sometimes. If the window is fairly new and the frame is in good condition, it may be possible to replace only the glass unit or sash. On older windows, a failed seal often means other parts, like balances and weatherstripping, are also worn, so replacing the whole window can be the better value.

3

Which window brands do you work with?

We work with brands including Pella and Andersen. Between them, they offer vinyl, wood, fiberglass, and composite windows in most common styles. The best choice depends on your home, the look you want, and your budget.

4

How much does window replacement cost?

The price depends on the number of windows, their size and style, the frame material, the glass package, and whether each opening needs an insert or a full-frame installation. Any rot repair adds to the cost. Estimates are free, and financing is available through GreenSky.
