A skylight can turn a dark stairwell, kitchen, or finished attic into one of the most inviting spaces in a home. But are skylights energy efficient? The honest answer is yes, when the skylight is properly selected, correctly placed, and professionally installed. An outdated or poorly installed unit, however, can create unwanted heat, heat loss, condensation, and roof leaks that erase its benefits.

Because heat rises, opening a venting skylight can allow hot, humid air to escape. This may reduce the need for air conditioning during mild weather and improve comfort in rooms that feel stuffy. Electric and solar-powered models can include rain sensors that close the skylight automatically when rain begins.

Venting is not a replacement for proper attic ventilation, bathroom exhaust, or a well-designed HVAC system. It is one part of a larger strategy for managing heat and moisture. The best option depends on how the room is used and whether the home has adequate existing ventilation.

Shades and Blinds Add Useful Control

Installation Has a Major Effect on Efficiency

Excessive heat in the room below is another concern. If a skylight makes a space uncomfortable every sunny afternoon, the answer may be a shade, better glazing, or replacement with a modern unit designed for solar control. Caulking around a failing skylight is rarely a durable solution. Water management needs to be addressed at the flashing and roofing level.

Choosing a Skylight for Long-Term Value

The lowest-cost skylight is not necessarily the most affordable over time. A better-performing unit can improve comfort, reduce lighting use, help control heat gain, and lower the risk of repairs caused by poor flashing or failed seals. It can also make a home more appealing by adding daylight to spaces that otherwise feel enclosed.

A skylight installation on a roof near the end of its service life may be better coordinated with roof replacement.
